Synopsis: I grew up wishing on stars.

My father taught me to believe…in destiny, in magic, in happily ever after. Dreams were my scripture and the starry night sky was my temple. Then Mom stopped believing, left him, and took us with her. At the age of sixteen, I cashed in my dreams to pay the rent, pawned my destiny to keep my sisters together.

Now, seven years later, I’m returning home, grieving the death of my mother, and settling my sisters back into the life Mom threw away. I never intended to stay. I don’t want to deal with my father, who is so invested in the spiritual world he forgets the physical. I don’t want to face William Bailey, whose eyes remind me of the girl I was, the things I’ve done, and the future I lost.

This would all be easier if Will hated me. As it is, I have to hold my secrets close so they won’t hurt him more than they’ve already hurt me. But he wants to be in my life. He wants what I can’t bring myself to confess I sold. He wants me.

I find myself looking to my stars again...wondering if I dare one more wish.

Review: 3 Stars - Wish I May, the second title in the New Hope series from author Lexi Ryan is the first title I’ve read from this author. Though it’s written as a series, the titles center around a group of characters however these titles can be read as a standalone, which was perfect for me in being able to participate in the blog tour with a review. However, now that I’ve read this one I am looking forward to going back to read the first title – Unbreak Me.

This story centers on Cally and William. High School Sweethearts torn apart by distance but swear to make it with the miles between them. In present day we see that they aren’t together, that something happened in the past that has destroyed the relationship that they had. Now Cally is back in town to bring her two little sisters home to her father and is trying to stay low key and out of sight until she can leave and head back to Vegas.

Throughout the story we get to see what happened on both sides during their time apart. We find out what broke them up. Cally was closed off and William was open to more. Cally was hiding a lot from her past and while William was too, Cally’s past had more of a chance to cause damaging affects to everyone around her.

The two were a train wreck. I only liked both of these characters part of the time. I felt that William had given in way too easily for my liking. I get that what they had in the past was “It” for him, but he basically didn’t care what had happened and wanted them to pick back up right where they let off. He wanted a family THAT badly and it just didn’t work for me. Parts of it did because of how well it fit with the story and it was more compassion he was showing than it was… I guess the word I’m looking for is needy.

And Cally, she was a hard nut to crack. I wanted to feel something for her but she just never let up or let go with what really happened. She was so closed off that I believe it caused more trouble than anything. She didn’t trust, which okay I get because of some things from her time in Vegas, but she’s in a safe place so to speak so why isn’t she opening up more to those who care about her? She’s ashamed, right, I get that too, but her inner dialogue often made me frustrated.

This is another one of those titles that I wanted to love, that I was looking forward to and I couldn’t wait to read. And it was another one of those titles that feel a tad short. Was it bad.. no. Were the characters likeable? Some of the time. Did I enjoy the story? Sure, there were bits and pieces that brought out some type of an emotional response with me. There’s just something a bit lacking that, at least for me felt missing.

In the end I’m glad that I read this title because it did one of the key things a book is supposed to do. It caused me to want to know what the heck these characters were hiding and to see the outcome of all once a certain someone showed up to cause even further havoc for Cally and William. Now that was something I didn’t see coming and being surprised in a story is always an added plus. Looking forward to reading the first title in this series and I will be keeping an eye out for more from this author in the future.

Those who liked the first book will enjoy this one and those who haven’t read either, while you can read them as standalone like I did I think I’d suggest starting with the first book to give you a more rounded idea of these characters. Though it’s not needed, it’s just my suggestion to future readers. New Adult fans and contemporary fans should also take note and give these a try.
